·       Gold Medal at Stampex

·       2011 AGM Saturday 1st October at Meole Brace School, Longden Rd Shrewsbury, SY3 9DW.   This is where the Shropshire Philatelic Society Fair takes place.

Dr John Horsey, our webmaster, was awarded a Gold Medal for his display of “Great Britain, The £5 Orange 1887-1902” at Stampex, London, September 2010.

  • The display covers the £5 Telegraphs stamp from its proof stage, through its colour trials and on to the issued stamp, its Imprimatur and Specimens.  In 1882 the Telegraphs plate was adapted for the £5 Postage stamp.  Shown are the rare Postage Imprimatur, the various shades of the issued stamp, its Specimen overprints, the unique £5 IR Official essay and numerous plate varieties.  It concludes with a die proof of the unissued £5 King Edward VII to complete the story.

  • The Judges’ comments include “A fine assembly of material which creates an impressive appearance overall.”

John is writing ‘the definitive book’ on the £5 orange and is currently analysing some 3200 images to determine patterns of use and the development of various plate varieties.  More images are needed to complete this study.  He would welcome images of any £5 orange or related items particularly anything unusual and especially examples used on piece.  Any scans, preferably at 300dpi or better, can be emailed to county@stampauctions.co.uk.    An acknowledgment in the book (unless not wished) is offered for anyone coming up with significant additions.  Information on any forgeries is also of interest.

There is some doubt if a £5 orange was ever used for postage rather than telegraphic or revenue purposes.  So far just two of the 3200 examined are convincingly postally used.  A few more examples would be useful, thank you.

ADPS cheque presentation to National Youth Committee.

On 16th April 2005 the East Midlands Federation Convention was held at Wisbech where 2005 ADPS Chairman Richard French presented a cheque on the behalf of the ADPS to Ann Drummer, Press Officer for the National Youth Committee.

The ADPS Trophy which for the past three years has been awarded annually by the National Youth Committee to the first time entry showing most promise in Youth Group Competitions.
The trophy was first presented to the Melville Youth Committee and awarded in 1993 after entries were displayed in the Royal Horticultural Hall in London.
Strangely, the trophy was 'lost' after the 1998 awards and was not found until several years later when, following enquiries as to its whereabouts by Richard French, it was discovered to be languishing in a cupboard in the Charterhouse Street headquarters of the Association of GB Philatelic Societies.

The original idea for the cup and award came from Mr. Arnold Berman, who was ADPS Chairman 1989-1995, and the then committee member Brian Downham. The cup itself is vintage silver circa 1920 with a Chester hallmark, standing 15 inches high and weighing in at 16 ounces. Inscriptions and polishing of the silver cup and fitting of the hardwood base was completed by Richard French, our 2005 Chairman. Shields with the annual winners' names are affixed to the polished hardwood base.
